What are the steps to building a log home?
How does the process of building a log home get started? Take a moment and look over our step-by-step guide on how the process works.
Step One: On-Site Analysis
After our initial meeting, we will either meet with you on your home site or closely study a site map, if a personal meeting is impossible. This will give us an opportunity to discuss what it is you find most appealing about the location, and to touch on the opportunities, and the constraints, the land affords the project.
Seeing (or walking) your land allows us to see your vision for the property and gives us a chance to review the overall project objectives. It also affords us the opportunity to determine how issues such as wind, sun direction, views, and slope of the land, will affect your project. Quite simply, giving an accurate price for a turn-key custom home is nearly impossible without closely inspecting the property.
We will then discuss the direction of your design. We can then either continue with your idea or help you mold a cohesive package which will meet your design objectives and also keep the project budget exactly where expected.
Step Two: Sketching of Basic Floor Plans and Elevations
The next step is to put together a preliminary sketch and begin planning rooms and spaces for your log or timber home. You and our design team can begin the process of taking your ideas, goals, thoughts, and dreams and turning them into reality.
Step Three: Refining, Clarifying and Detailing the Design
After exchanging basic ideas for your home and determining what the property is best suited for, we will continue working with you to further refine the design. New drawings and design concepts can be e-mailed, faxed, over-nighted, or preferably, posted to an individualized client web page on our site for a quick response. This method is preferred, as there is a decreased risk of file transfer issues and delays to the project.
We have a solution for the technologically advanced, the not-so-advanced, all the way to the tech novices. We understand that not everyone spends most of their waking hours staring at a computer screen, studying or designing homes. Our solutions-based approach to design can be tailored to you and your specific preferences. If you understand two-dimensional drawings best, we can do that. If you prefer to work solely in 3-D for the project, we can easily do that too! From the comfort of your own home to the secluded and focused area at our in-house design studio, we have an option for everyone.
Step Four: Construction Documentation
Once the concept designs are approved, construction documents will be prepared for the project. Drawings are prepared using the latest in building information modeling (BIM) computer-aided design (CAD) software, to help assure the highest level of technical accuracy and detailed cost analysis take-off.
Utilizing these drawings, in combination with our knowledge of the best building methods and practices, we will create construction documents that will provide a detailed road map to a successfully completed project.
Step Five and Beyond
After the complete design of the home is prepared, we can then give detailed material and cost analysis, planning, and staging, as well as full 3D virtual visualization of your home. This helps us convey the message set out in the design phase, and ensures our customers are getting exactly what they expect, with as few surprises as possible. Once these steps to building a log home are completed, you will know exactly what the inside and outside of your home will look like. Communication and collaboration are both made easier, and better communication always allows for a better build and final product.
